Press Release - August 2003
And
the beat goes on: New Shows launch on totallyradio for our aural
pleasure
1. Solid Steel Ninja Tune
2. The Iman Selection with DJ Benja
3. Catskills
totallyradio is an internet radio station which promotes and celebrates
music from outside the mainstream.
The station provides on-demand specialist music radio across a range
of genres. Established as an antidote to the sugary pop of mainstream
commercial radio totallyradio reaches a worldwide audience delivering
over 40,000 hours of listening a week.
This month the pioneering Brighton based service launches three
new shows with key partners from the independent music sector. The
new programmes extend the range of a unique platform for non-mainstream
music.
In a commercial radio climate of PR-led
playlists rule and dumbed down pop, great music and talented artists
are not receiving the airplay they deserve.
Totallyradio fills a niche with vast archives of great music as
well as new shows week in and out. We look to develop partnerships
to create new shows that broaden our offer.
These new shows fit with totallyradios ethos of promoting
quality music from around the globe. (Steve Stark

1. Solid Steel presented by Ninja Tunes
Solid Steel began way back in 1988 when Matt Black & Jonathan
More both had their own shows on the then pirate station of KISS.
They joined up to form both the duo Coldcut and the show Solid Steel
on KISS 100 FM.
Since then PC and later Strictly Kev of DJ Food have joined in on
a regular basis and became a weekly fixture on the show. DK joined
as producer as the show needed someone to organise and run things
with Coldcut and Food increasingly away on tour. DK has become a
regular contributor and widely respected DJ in his own right.
'All the essential Ninja trademarks are here,
deft, witty mixing, screwy spoken word and ace juxtaposition.' Time
Out
The 1st Solid Steel show was broadcast on totallyradio in July 2003.
The shows can be found in the totallyradio archives and new ones
are broadcast for free every fortnight.
2. The Iman Selection with DJ Benja
DJ Benja did his first show on WHPK 88.5 FM Chicago in 1995 and
currently has a bi-weekly show on Friday afternoons that has been
going steady since 1999.
His show on totallyradio features the heavy roots reggae sounds
of the 70s era in an extended mix style. Focussing on a particular
artist, producer, studio or style, each show highlights the variety
of riddim versions in his selection.
Chicago isn't the hottest spot for roots reggae in the US but Benja
keeps the spirit alive with his show and weekly reggae night in
Hyde Park on Chicago's South side.
Other credits include his DJ work for Voice of Soweto and Radio
CKI both in South Africa.
I focus on playing the dub & roots reggae cuts coming
from the late sixties to the early eighties. I love the classic
roots sound. I like to play sounds that reveal the different connections
within reggae music, and on my radio show I often juggle between
different cuts on the same rhythms to give the listener a better
context for the music.
3. Catskills presented by Jonny Reggae
Mr Reggae is one of three top cats at Catskills Records, co-founder
of the label and the club nights that go with it. With twelve years
of DJing under his belt, and tireless work in the UK promoting the
hip hop, beats and reggae scene, you can expect a diverse selection
of tunes every month on this new show on totallyradio.
In 1996 Jonny and two old friends threw some money together and
started a record label called Catskills Records.
The first release on Catskills was Sonorous Stars' Indian Motorcyles:
a lush down tempo EP that still is considered a classic of it's
time. Catskills has steadily grown to become one of the most influencial
and successful independent record labels in the the UK and has chart
success with Finland's finest Pepe Deluxé.

Press Release - July 2003
A new platform for music outside the mainstream
totallyradio exists to provide a much-needed platform for the promotion
of new and marginalised music and artists.
In the current dumbed down world of analogue radio there are few avenues
for independent music makers to reach listeners or for listeners to
find an alternative to sugary sweet pop, overproduced RnB and mainstream
dance.
From alt. indie to reggae, techno to jazz, electronica to alt. country,
hip hop to latino - totallyradio fills the spaces left by analogue
radio and online jukebox stations.
Every show is presented by passionate experts who have the knowledge
to inform and inspire their listeners and find some of the best music
available in their genre.
As broadband spreads across the world, people are listening to more
music online.
Music downloads and file sharing are no longer considered the death
of music sales.
Music online is now heralded as the saviour of non-mainstream music
- a place without playlists, an interactive environment that may become
the only viable promotional outlet for outsider music. totallyradio
is a meeting place for fans and makers of non mainstream music.
Streaming from studios in Brighton, England, totallyradio is available
now at www.totallyradio.com
The relaunched service provides presenter-led programming on demand,
