totallyradio's
passion
and commitment for new and innovative music,
delivered on its merits and free of corporate agendas, should come
across loud and clear through your PC's speakers. It is old news
that the internet was made for music, but the extent of that relationship
is still barely realised.
At totallyradio the knowledge, means and motivation of the DJs and
producers dovetailed with the needs of a new global audience, one
of indeterminate character and size but nonetheless demanding of
audio capable of drowning out the monotony of the mainstream.
It is, in fact, the present condition of radio that best explains
why totallyradio had to happen.
"What
really bothers me is people being mediocre in my chosen field, and
being deliberately mediocre because it's much easier to just tow
the party line and support the status quo."
Everett True (DJ, Careless Talk Costs Lives Show)
There
is a perceived crisis in music radio.
Take the UK, with its tired formats and narrow playlists falling
ever deeper into a rut, made all the worse by new technology that
allows people to search further afield for fresh sounds.
As mainstream music shows become increasingly crammed with the anodyne
bi-products of formulaic pop star TV shows, even the industry driving
these trends is noticing the dead end up ahead many of us spotted
long ago.
There is only so much fodder any audience can take before it bites
the spoonfeeding hand in front of it.
As Claire Kember points out: "Tightly
controlled, advertiser-orientated radio has got to change because
it has become so tedious.
This is probably why totallyradio is beginning to flourish, because
there is no alternative."
"Pop
star as creative individual has gone? That idea that you
can dress in an individual way and sing in an individual
way. Everything in the charts is so mundane sounding now.
Everyone wants to sound the same."
Boogaloo Stu (DJ, Hot Hits and Juicy Bits Show)
